The incredible health benefits of eating salmon

If you are trying to eat healthier, salmon makes an excellent choice for your meals. It’s loaded with protein, omega-3 oils and amino acids, all of which have many health benefits. If that’s not enough positives for you, 4oz of salmon only contains around 150 calories (giving it a low GI index) which makes it the perfect choice for a healthy meal.

7 health benefits of eating salmon

1.       Protection for your joints

One of the most commonly talked about benefits of earing salmon is that fish oil is great for our joints. Regularly consuming omega-3 rich fish can have anti-inflammatory results on areas of the body such as knee joints and elbows, allowing for a great or less painful range of motion. This is due to small proteins contained in the fish called bioactive peptides.

2.       Cardiovascular benefits

Regular consumption of omega-3 rich fish such as salmon is associated with a decreased risk of certain cardiovascular problems, for example heart attacks, strokes and high blood pressure.

3.       Low in calories, high in protein

Foods that are high in protein help us feel full-up for longer. As salmon is fairly low in calories it is a good choice for a healthy meal that will keep you full for hours. There are many different ways of eating salmon – for example steamed, broiled or smoked – and it can be enjoyed hot or cold.

4.       Beneficial to your eyesight

The risk of contracting both macular degeneration and chronic dry eye may be reduced by eating regular amounts of salmon. Two servings per week are recommended to reduce the risk of macular degeneration (a chronic eye condition that leads to loss of vision).

5.       Decreased cancer risk

Salmon is an excellent source of Vitamin D which is crucial for maintaining your body’s natural health. Some cancers can be linked to Vitamin D deficiency; frequent salmon consumption can help to maintain healthy levels of the vitamin in your body.

6.       Improved brain functions

Salmon contains a large concentration of DHA which is a type of fat that many researchers consider to be one of the most important for the human brain. Some studies have shown that IQ levels may be affected by the amount of omega-3 consumed.

7.       Get a better night’s sleep

Salmon contains an amino acid called tryptophan which is a natural sedative that can increase sleepiness, even in those with mild insomnia. Our bodies cannot naturally make tryptophan and therefore you can only get it from your diet.
